So close yet so far....

16th of March: With just 266km approximately to go and only 50 km left of the tough west coast Babs has found herself stranded by large surf just North of Kahuranagi point with only sandflies for company. Despite an attempt to break out over the surf. It must be frustrating, as soon as she comes around the top heading east on Farewellspit the SW2m swell (4m breaking face) will not be of as much concern. Then its a crossing down to the Beautiful Abel Tasman National Park. But forcast is for even larger surf monday but calming down over tuesday, nothing to do but rest, heal those infected cuts and feed the native animals (sandflies) who happen to be a protected species!
On Saturady CET Renata Chlumska called Babs on her sat phone live on stage at the Swedish outdoor show with a large audience listening to hear Babs tell a little about her trip.
James.

Good for Renata for giving you a call! These last days are always the toughest days mentally of a long expedition. Use that idea to savour them! Each one will be precious once you've crossed the finish line with nowhere to paddle the following day.

As we left a beutiful day in the Manawatu to travel down to Wellington for a nice leisurely paddle. The closer we got the weather packed in. I thought of you Babs over there as the south Island was hidden by a big black cloud with a horrendous wind along the ocean. Our thoughts are with you & hoping you have better weather for your trip around the split & into Abel Tasman. It would be great to paddle along side of you on your last leg into Picton. Good Luck for your jounrny back.

James - your doing a fantastic job, keep it up

Hey Babs
It is a perfect day here in Westport today. We got Justine and Barry off this morning after they had two rest days with us. I hope you had the same calm seas up at Kahurangi Point and managed to get out of there!
Take care
Harriet
